Church Communications resources and tips from Justin Dean

The folks at Long Hollow approached their song list a bit differently for this service. Since the music was such a huge part of the dramatic performance, it wasn?t your typical three fasties and two slow. Their creative director, Jason Dyba, had most of the vision for the songs while he was planning the production.

They?ve been making a shift in how they choose songs for a while. Instead of the whole worship segment falling on the shoulders of Gerald Trottman, their worship leader, he and Jason have begun collaborating a bit more. Gerald says it this way: ?I’ve learned that more eyes on something is always better. Wiser. Broader. With a church this size, it’s necessary to have more eyes on it.?

So they collaborated on the songs. In the end, they stuck pretty closely to Jason?s vision. And for the most part they left the songs arranged just like the recordings. ?If it ain?t broke, don?t fix it.?

The Progression

The way the service progressed, there were three sections of music during the service. The first section was, while still worshipful, strategically more about giving people a chance to get into the room and get seated. They wanted to keep latecomers from missing some of the big creative element. Plus, it helped folks get settled and relaxed so they could really experience what was coming.

The second section was during the creative element itself. The songs tied in with the story of Phillip Randoll and helped the creative element progress.

Finally, they had a worship song after the message to help cement the day. They wanted to leave people in a worshipful atmosphere and help set up the next week.

Here?s how the song list progressed.

Section 1

Again I Say Rejoice by Israel Houghton

Christ is Risen by Matt Maher

Section 2

Beautiful Things by Gungor

Carry Your Name by Christy Nockels
They started this song as a solo. Then about 1/3 of the way through, they encouraged the congregation to join in and use it as a worshipful moment.

The Great Awakening by Leeland

God Gave Me You by Dave Barnes

Love is On the Move by Leeland

Healer by Kari Jobe
They started this song as a solo as the wife died. Again, 1/3 of the way through, they encouraged the congregation to join in. Then they tied this song in with a reprise of:

Carry Your Name by Christy Nockels
